This success story highlights Doreen Simiyu Okweno’s work as Hub Manager at the Nambale NGCDF Youth Empowerment Hub in Busia County. Through the DigiKen project, Doreen is expanding access to digital skills and economic opportunities for young people, women, persons with disabilities and other underserved communities.
The Hub provides practical training in foundational digital literacy, content creation, entrepreneurship, data skills, freelancing and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. Through community outreach, partnerships and flexible learning approaches, it brings digital education closer to people who face barriers to accessing technology and training.
In less than 12 months, the Hub onboarded 1,142 learners, with 552 completing foundational digital skills training, 117 completing intermediate training, 43 completing advanced training and 22 completing digital skills training for MSMEs.
Doreen’s journey demonstrates how community-led innovation and inclusive digital education can build confidence, strengthen independence and create pathways to participation in the digital economy. Her vision is to establish Nambale as a model for inclusive digital empowerment and extend these opportunities to communities across Western Kenya.
